Block Paving Driveways in Oldham
Driveway paving is laid using various styles, with options on standard concrete block paving, clay pavers, permeable paving, tegula paving or cobblestones. The preparation work generally stays the same, except for permeable paving, which requires deeper excavation and a different base for laying the paving.
Here is a breakdown of the different types of driveway paving products you choose from:
Concrete Block Paving
The most common driveway paving is laid using concrete block paving produced by manufacturers such as Marshalls and Brett. It is available in various colours and one size (200 x 100) but in 50mm, 60mm and 80mm thicknesses. It is generally laid in a herringbone pattern to help lock (interlock) the paving together.
Block paving makes a very sturdy and durable option for a driveway, private road or patio and is the most affordable type of paving product on the market.
Tegula Paving
Tegula paving is made from concrete but unlike block paving; it is laid using multiple sizes. The most common style of Tegula paving is applied with three sizes, 160 x 160, 160 x 120, and 240 x 160, with thicknesses of 50mm, 60mm and 80mm to choose from.
Tegula is available in the same colours as block paving but comes in two different styles, with one type rumbled and the second option a smoother finish. This option is more expensive than block paving and will take slightly longer to install.
Clay Pavers
One of the original types of paving products is clay pavers. This type of paving is less known, but it does make an excellent surface option. The main difference from standard paving is that clay pavers are made from clay and not concrete. The benefit of this is the colour of the clay pavers will never fade, but unfortunately, the colours are more limited than concrete block paving.
Clay pavers are generally laid the same way as block paving, but the compaction phase of the clay pavers is done with a rubber matt attached to the whacker plate to protect the clay pavers from cracking.
Permeable Paving
If you have issues with water flooding your driveway, permeable paving makes an excellent solution. It is manufactured the same way as block paving, but on the sides of the paving, they are more open, which allows a more effortless transfer of the water since it is jointed with a fine grit rather than kiln-dried sand.
The base work for permeable paving must be carried out correctly, with a minimum of 12 inches being excavated and replaced with a mix of crushed concrete, Type 2 MOT and a topping of Type 1 MOT on top. This will ensure the water has no obstructions on draining down.
Cobblestones
The original paving product is cut from granite stone. Cobblestones are available in a minimal range of colours. Still, they have the benefit of being multi-tone and a guaranteed colour finish that will significantly outlast any other paving product.
Cobblestones are laid individually on a mortar bed and require a more labour-intensive period to get them laid. They are most commonly applied in a stretcher bond or a swirl style, with the grouting done with a mortar or a resin geo fix grout.
